The journey to 2010 begins now 10:42 PM

No disrespect to St. Vincent & Grenadines, but the journey for Canada to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa begins Wednesday night against Jamaica.

I'm feeling nervous, in a good, excited way. Which is different than I've felt heading into important games in the past. I can't wait for Wednesday, and I know I am not alone with The Voyageurs and various Toronto FC groups organizing the masses and making sure that Canada will be extremely well supported Wednesday night.

Over at Sportsnet, Gerry Dobson is reporting that Issey Nakajima-Farran picked up a knock over the weekend playing for his club FC Nordsjaelland and won't be taking part. A blow, but not a major one.

Gerry also has some kind words for the CSA, and I have to admit that I have noticed that major CSA screw-ups have become less and less frequent in the past year. It feels as if something has changed. Maybe they read the V's boards and are starting to listen to the fans (although I am still not sure whether this store is the "official" CSA merchandise store. There are no links to it from the CSA site and the CSA hasn't returned my email). At any rate, it has been nice talking about the game as opposed to the mismanagement of it.

If you are going to be taking part in Toronto Wednesday night, I'll make the same pitch to you as I did to the rest of the V's - be the media. Be a citizen journalist and document as much as possible.

Bring your digital cameras, camcorders, phones, digital media devices and take tons of photos. Shoot video. And then post it to sites like YouTube and Flickr. Let's use these open social media tools to tell the story of our WC campaign - and begin the grassroots campaign of soccer domination to the masses.

For those of you familiar with tagging, tag your content with the keyword wc2010canada. I am sure there are web developers who can begin mashing up multimedia content and start virally spreading the story of Canada's march to 2010.

There is no one in a better position to tell the story of the 2010 campaign than us. If you are going to be in Toronto on Wednesday, Montreal on September 6th, or Edmonton on October 15th, tell your story and, bit by bit, let's document this journey.

So, who are you going to cheer for?

Name of the liquor store in cottage country we are heading to next weekend is "Liquor Down Under". My whiskey tango roots haunt me.
Clint is in his happy place - drinking beer on the patio.
@fucci thanks for the link to the TLC site at VIU.
Just spent frustrating 2 1/2 hours getting kids to bed. Finally silence.

Canada names roster for WCQ against Jamaica 5:39 PM

6 days to go til the next round of 2010 World Cup Qualifying begins in CONCACAF with Canada taking on Jamaica at BMO in Toronto. Yesterday Dale Mitchell named the squad that will open the third round of qualifying for Canada and he is pretty well sticking to the core. And why not? They have been more than getting the job done recently.

The roster does pose a couple of interesting conundrums for Mitchell, who is in the nice position to be able to pick a tactical lineup with numerous players of quality available to fill key roles.

In goal, who do you start? Onstad seems to be the guy that Mitchell has been going with lately, but BMO is Sutton's home field. Interesting that Lars Hirshfeld has kind of fallen off the goalkeeping radar. Perhaps the move from Rosenborg to Cluj, where he isn't getting much playing time, wasn't such a good one.

Across the back, hard to argue with Klukowski and Stalteri as the FB's, but in the middle it's a toss up between Hastings, McKenna and Sieroux. Any combination would work for me. Brennan may also be a wildcard here, being the hometown boy.

In the middle, Hutch and JDG will anchor. I like the idea of Imhof in a holding role just behind providing some defensive support to free them up a bit to attack. Throw Radz and DeRo in the midfield as attackers and Rob Friend up front and you've got a pretty strong lineup with options aplenty on the bench.

It's nice to see Iain Hume back in the lineup. His speed and tenacity comng off the bench make him a great sub. If you need some flair in the attack when the legs of Radz start giving out, Hume and/or Issy coming on the field will give an injection of speed into the side that will cause the opposition trouble.

Some talk in the Voyageurs forum about Gerba getting called ahead of Olivier Occean, but hard to argue with Gerba and his record for Canada in the past year and a half. He socres a whack of goals for us. And, nice to see him finally sign with a club, MK Dons of England's League One (who, as an aside, had a surprise win over Championship side Norwich earlier this week.)

TV Coverage

  • Sportsnet will be carrying the game on all their networks. Check the listings for your area.

Media coverage of the game

Other Notes

  • Jamaica is managed by Brazilian Rene Simoes, who was in the running for the Canadian MNT post last year. Simoes took the Reggae Boyz to the 1998 World Cup.

  • Looks like a sellout at BMO Field - and probably a very pro-Canada crowd (as strange as that seems, that hasn't always been the case with WCQ at home). Nice work! Hopefully we can follow suit in Montreal and Edmonton against Honduras and Mexico later this fall.
